Online Poker vs. Live Poker
Since its’ earliest inceptions many years ago, poker has been a traditional, live card game played by groups of people in homes, taverns, casinos, and pubs anywhere in the world. People play for various reasons, whether it is to win money, have fun, or to socially bond with other people. The aspect of winning and losing large sums of money has attracted the attention of movie, television, and book writers. You can watch films or read novels based entirely on the game of poker.
Thanks to the rise of technology, mainly the internet and personal computer, a new form of poker, “Online poker”, has emerged. This form of poker is found popular by many people for several reasons. The main reason is probably convenience. To find a game on the internet, a person does not need to leave the home at all. You can simply log on to a poker room, and find games and other players at any time of the day with the simple click of a mouse.
Another reason is the speed and pace. In a live game, it can take a matter of minutes to get cards dealt, cards shuffled, and chips passed between players. In an online game, all of these actions take place in a fraction of that time, merely seconds. Therefore, more hands can be played in a short amount of time. In a live game of Texas hold em, you can see an average of 30 hands an hour, whereas in an online game of Texas Holdem, you can see up to 100 hands an hour on average.
Variety is also a big factor. There are many online poker rooms to choose from, offering many different sizes of stakes, from as little as penny stakes all the way up to thousands of dollars. Some online poker rooms also offer many different variants of poker. In a live setting, the stakes and games will usually be limited by physical capacity and amount of players. With a little research, you can compare online poker rooms and decide on which sites you want to sign up with, so that you can get the most out of your online experience.
Online poker has a lot to offer, however it is not quite the same as live poker. You are not able to see or hear the other players, so you lose that interactivity that is traditionally associated with card games. There is also a concern with integrity. You are not able to see firsthand, how the cards are shuffled, or how the online poker rooms are operating. In a live setting, you would be able to witness much of this with your own eyes. Therefore, when you are playing on an online poker room, you should put your faith and money into an online room that you feel is dealing a legitimate game. Many players play online because they feel their money is safe on the sites they choose to play on.
So is online poker the clear favorite over live poker? They both have their advantages and disadvantages. Some players will prefer one over the other, however there are plenty who do not have a clear preference, and play both regularly. Diversifying between the two can help you improve your game and let you experience things you wouldn’t if you were to choose only one instead of the other. Whatever form of poker you decide to play, just make sure that you are having a good time, because in the end, that is what poker should be all about.
